Germany: The Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarship

In accordance with the guidelines of the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) as well as the Foreign Office (AA), scholarships are awarded by the Scholarship Department to German and foreign students.

Applicants seeking to receive a scholarship for their studies must be matriculated at a state or state-recognized university or college in Germany. At the time they join the scholarship program, they may not have exceeded the maximum number of semesters prescribed for their respective course of study and they should still have at least three semesters of studies ahead of them before achieving their degree. Funding for one-year study programs is not possible.

When submitting your application, please observe the following requirements:

Those applying for a Bachelor’s course, Diploma or Magister course or a state examination must, at the time of application, have completed their first semester of studies.

Those applying for a Master’s course or other postgraduate studies are advised to submit their application to the Scholarship Department before the start of the postgraduate course; the proof of matriculation in the respective course can be handed in later, it must, however, be submitted at the beginning of the scholarship at the latest. Applicants must furnish evidence of having completed their undergraduate studies (Bachelor`s degree, Diploma, Magister, State Examination) and should provide specific details as to how the content of such a course of study builds on their undergraduate studies and how it is linked to the applicant’s intended profession. If, at the time of application, the diploma of the undergraduate study course cannot be presented yet, all courses with their credit points must be enlisted; the diploma can be handed in at a later stage, it must, however, be submitted at the beginning of the scholarship. No tuition fees will be assumed for courses of study that are liable to costs.

Application Procedure

The application procedure is divided into three stages:

Submitting a brief application (see below for “application documents” to be submitted).

Submitting a detailed application; interview with a liaison lecturer of the Heinrich Boell Foundation/his or her written assessment.

Workshop with individual interview and group discussion.

Following each application stage only a small group of applicants will be selected that will be considered for the next round. About 10 to 20 % of all applicants will be asked to submit a detailed application.

Application Deadline is September 1, 2006

'Unity and Plurality in Europe: Religion and Public Life“, Mostar, BiH

Unity and Plurality in Europe: Religion and Public Life is the title of the conference to be covered by three panels.

The programme will be organized by the International Forum Bosnia (Sarajevo). There is a possibility that participation in the organization would be accepted by following organizations as well: Centre for European Categories (Reggio Emilia), Faculty of Franciscan Theology (Sarajevo), Faculty of Philosophy (Sarajevo), Interreligious Centre on Public Life (Boston), Inter-University Centre (Dubrovnik), Institute “Euro-Balkan” (Skopje), Institute “Vlado Gotovac” (Zagreb), University of Mostar, University of Verona and Yesodot Centre for Study Torah and Democracy (Jerusalem). It is the continuation and development of several years of research and discussion on the potential for tolerance grounded on principles that do not draw exclusively from those prevailing in modernity.

In the modern world most ideas of tolerance and pluralism rest on liberal and secular ideas of self and society. These ideas can be briefly summarized as: a) the establishment of a secular public sphere; b) the privatisation of religion; c) a politics of rights rather than a politics of the good; d) a secular idea of the individual as a self-regulating moral agent. However in most of the world these ideas simply do not hold. In most parts of the world the public sphere is not secularised, religion remains a public and not a private matter, politics are articulated along with visions of a truth community and the self is seen as constituted by collective definitions and desiderata rather than by purely individual pursuits and interests. This is true not only in

Southeast Asia and the Indian sub-continent, but also in the Balkans, the Middle East, Ireland, North Africa, Turkey and even in parts of that most secular of enclaves, Western Europe.

Religious identities then, continue to matter. Given the continued, if not renewed, salience of religious identities world-wide, as well as their potential to form a focus of conflict and to provide a dangerous legitimation for existing conflicts, it is crucial to take religion seriously. This means seeing the potential of religion to provide resources for tolerance and mutual acceptance and not solely for conflict and oppression. The UPE: RPL is devoted to furthering these goals within research and an educational milieu.

Media research

A team of young researchers and journalists, members of the SA Youth Group, conducted a research of the printed media in the region during the last year that we would like to share with all of you. Main goal was to see how media in the region write about the 'other sides', including the cross-border cooperation, and what is the quality of writing and professional skills of the journalists. It would then serve as a basis for the training of all interested journalist in order to improve their writing skills as well as a round table where they can exchange the ideas about potential joint projects and activities. As you will see in the research, the scope of the analyzed topics finally turned out to be a lot bigger and even more interesting, as it included also minority rights, Hague, etc. For the report please see:
