The fellowships offered under this scheme are of short term duration (6 months maximum) and are intended for specialized training at the postgraduate level. Priority targets are promising and qualified specialists who seek to undertake advanced research or to upgrade their skills and knowledge of state-of-the-art developments in their field of study or work.
Eligibility :
Graduate and Postgraduate candidates for study abroad wishing to:
- Pursue training;
- Undertake advanced research;
- Upgrade skills; or
- Attend specialized or refresher courses.
Priority attention:
- women candidates;
- Candidates from LDCs (Lest Developed Countries), SIDS (Small Island Developing States) as well as from PCPD countries (post conflict/post disaster) and/or in transition.
Qualifications required:
- University degree, i.e. at least a B.A. or B.Sc.
- Be not more than 45 years of age.
Additional qualifications:
- Applicants must have exceptional merit, and have demonstrated that they possess outstanding potential to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of their country.
Language proficiency:
- Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study.
Field of study:
- All applications must be closely aligned with "UNESCO's expected strategic objectives and programme priorities" as decided by the 161st and 165th session of the Executive Board (161 EX/Decision 3.6.3 and 165 EX/Decision 8.6 respectively).
- It is therefore recommended that the proposed study programme(s) coincide(s) with the designated priorities for each of the fice Major Programme as described in the approved Programme and Budget for 2010-2011 (35 C/5 ).

Our target group are excellent students from all disciplines of natural and life sciences and medicine who are motivated to pursue their scientific career in an international research environment. In general, applicants should not be older than 30 when they apply, although career breaks will be taken into account.

Principal's Career Development PhD Scholarships
57 PhD Scholarships are available to students from any country. Each scholarship covers the UK/EU rate of tuition fee as well as a stipend which in year 1 will be £13,500; year 2 £14,000; and year 3 £14,500. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships are awarded for three years.

Overseas Research Scholarships
58 overseas research scholarships are also available to overseas PhD students undertaking a research degree in any field of study. Each award covers the difference between the UK/EU tuition fee rate and that chargeable to an overseas student. Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years.
28 of these awards are available through the Scottish Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (SORSAS), with a further 30 scholarships offered under the University's Edinburgh Global Research Scholarships.
All applicants should apply for a SORSAS award, and if you are unsuccessful in obtaining an award, you will automatically be considered for an Edinburgh GlobalResearch Scholarship.

NIDA-FUNDED HUMPHREY FELLOWSHIPS (DRUG ABUSE):
The drug abuse component of the field of public health policy and management emphasizes drug abuse education, treatment, and prevention. Fellowships funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) target more specialized candidates. Appropriate candidates for NIDA-funded Humphrey Fellowships include mid-level researchers, research managers and policy makers in universities, drug abuse prevention or treatment programs, health or social services industries or medical facilities. Candidates preferably should have a doctoral degree or equivalent in medicine, health, behavioral or social science. Professionals employed by social welfare, education or community-based organizations would be appropriate if they meet the general eligibility criteria. Law enforcement candidates are not eligible unless they have a public health focus on drug abuse epidemiology, education, treatment and prevention, and meet the requirements to follow a program based in a school of public health.
NATURE OF THE PROGRAM: It is essential that candidates have a clear understanding of the professional development component of the program. If a candidate's intent is to pursue an advanced academic degree, or to attend a specific university, he/she cannot be nominated for the program. Candidates should also understand that Humphrey maintenance support may not enable them to maintain the standard of living they enjoy at home.

Following a technical review, candidates will be invited for an interview at the end of June. Finalists will be notified at the end of July. Final selection results will be forwarded from Washington in March of 2011.
English language testing (TOEFL TEST):
All FINALISTS will be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Do not register for the test before you are notified of your status. If you have taken the test in the past 2 years please attach the score report.

FINANCIAL PROVISIONS AND DEPENDENTS
The Humphrey Fellowship provides:
- tuition and university fees
- a monthly maintenance allowance
- a book and supplies allowance
- a computer subsidy
- round-trip international travel to the host institution (and to the Fellow's English-language training program when applicable)
- domestic travel to Washington, D.C. for a special seminar.
- Supplementary funds are available for professional activities such as field trips or attendance at conferences. Humphrey Fellowships are not renewable.
Humphrey Fellows should plan to bring with them some personal funds to cover incidental expenses not covered in the grant. Humphrey Fellowships do not include funds for dependents (family members). Humphrey Fellows are responsible for providing travel, insurance, and financial support for any dependents accompanying them to the United States. Please note that English and orientation centers cannot accommodate dependents. Therefore, dependents should not arrive in the United States until the Fellows are settled in their academic year programs and have secured housing (at least 30 days after the Fellow's arrival).

The Materials Engineering group has vacancies for PhD studentships in the general fields of mechanics of materials, joining technologies, residual stress characterisation, structural integrity and high temperature behaviour. Some studentships are available with full stipend and fees, for UK, EU and international applicants.
Precise research topics will depend on the expertise on the student recruited and the source of funding for the particular project. Likely areas include the validation and accuracy of residual stress measurement techniques applied to welds, including neutron diffraction and the newly-developed contour method; high-temperature microstructural evolution in materials for aerospace applications; and creep of materials for power plant applications.

PhD positions within EOR at the Centre for Integrated Petroleum Research (Uni CIPR)
CIPR is the only Norwegian Centre of Excellence for petroleum research. The centre consists of an international research group with more than 100 researchers and PhDs from all over the world. Open positions
There are several open PhD positions affiliated with research projects within Enhanced Oil Recovery. The projects are funded by the Norwegian Research Council and industry. The projects are based in Uni CIPR, with employment in Uni Research AS.

MI Lab (Medical Imaging Laboratory for Innovative Future Healthcare) is an inter-disciplinary research centre integrating industry, hospital and university. The overall goal is to facilitate better health care and improved patient treatment through research and innovation in medical imaging.
MI Lab is located in Trondheim, Norway, in the fully integrated university hospital, St. Olavs Hospital. The PhD positions will have different tasks in the areas of ultrasound technology, including acoustics, probe design, electronics, signal processing and image/video analysis. Also clinical research projects in applications of a new pocket-sized ultrasound scanner, and heart and brain imaging with MR and Ultrasound are available.
We will to some extent tailor each PhD project to the candidates special competence and interests.
Master students in their last year are also encouraged to apply.
These applicants will be evaluated on the same line as other applicants, but may only start a PhD fellowship after finished Masters's degree.

Qualificaions and practical information:
For a PhD position a Master's degree or equivalent is required with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best).

Selected applicants will be invited to undergo an interview. If none of the applicants holds up to the high standards of MI Lab, it may be decided not to hire any of the applicants.
The duration of a PhD fellowship is 3 years.

Depending on qualifications and academic background, Research Fellows at the Faculty of Medicine will be remunerated at wage levels 45-55 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 353 000 - NOK 420 600 a year, of which 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. A yearly amount for operating costs will be added.
The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees in Norway.

CALL FOR APPLICANTS
The English-speaking postgraduate programme "Postgraduate Programme in Southeast European Studies" will accept twenty-five (25) students for the academic year 2010-2011. In addition to the above number, the Programme will also accept one (1) holder of a scholarship from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) in the Programme's field of study and one (1) non-Greek citizen who has been awarded a
scholarship by the Greek state. Ôhe scholarship students are required to fulfil the
criteria for admission to the Programme listed below.
Eligible to apply are graduates of Greek Higher Education Institutions or foreign
Higher Education Institutions which have been recognised by the Greek state as
equivalent. Preference will be given to graduates in the fields of study covered by the Programme. In the case of foreign degrees, official recognition by Hellenic Naric is a prerequisite for participation in the Programme. Those interested in enrolling should submit their application from 20 January - 23 April 2010 (post-stamped).
Documents required:
1. The completed application form (which may be downloaded from our Web site http://www.pspa.uoa.gr).
2. A statement of purpose in English (500 words maximum).
3. A certified copy of the applicant's first degree (a minimum GPA of 6.5/10 is a
prerequisite for acceptance on the Programme). Applicants who will not have graduated by the application deadline but are expected to graduate in 2010 should submit a signed statement declaring (a) their current grade point average, (b) the number of courses they need to pass in order to graduate, and (c) that the final degree will be submitted, at the latest, by registration in October.
4. A certified copy of the applicant's official university grades transcript. 5. Official translations into Greek of documents 3 (degree) and 4 (transcript), required when the original documents are in a language other than Greek or English. Students submitting their documents in English should be aware that if accepted on the Programme, they will be required to provide official translations into Greek for registration at the University of Athens.
6. Proof of excellent knowledge of the English language in the form of certified
copies of (a) Proficiency of Michigan or Cambridge or (b) TOEFL with a minimum score of 230 (computer based), 570 (paper-based) or 88 (Internetbased) or (c) of a University degree in English Language and Literature or (d) of a degree from an English speaking University (If the university is located in a non-English speaking country, applicants should also attach a certificate from the University certifying that all courses were conducted in English).
7. Two recommendation letters, at least one of which should be from a faculty member of your own university. Recommendation letters should be written in English or Greek, have an original signature and stamp of the relevant institution and should be attached to the application in a sealed envelope with the referee's signature over the flap. Applicants are asked to use the "Form for Referees" which is part of the application material.
8. Simple photocopies of other supporting documents e.g. knowledge of other foreign languages, seminar attendance certificates, etc.
9. Successful applicants who hold a first degree from a non-Greek university will
be required, upon acceptance by the programme, to submit their qualifications
for recognition by Hellenic Naric, the official Greek certificating institution for
foreign degrees (please see the website of Hellenic Naric http://www.doatap.gr). Further information on this process will be provided once the candidate selection process is complete. No documents will be accepted after the 23 April 2010 deadline. The Selection Committee reserves the right to interview candidates. South East European Studies at Oxford (SEESOX)/Alpha Bank Visiting Fellowship on the Political Economy of South East Europe for the academic year 2010-11.

Scholarship: £21,500 per annum
We seek a candidate who will undertake research on the political economy of SE Europe, in one of the following indicative areas: post-communist political, economic and/or social developments; foreign direct investment in the region; reform and European integration; developments in transport, energy, migration; regional cooperation and regional initiatives.
The candidate must submit a full research proposal which should be related to at least one of the above areas. Applicants must have completed a PhD study in one of the following fields of social sciences: politics, economics, political economy, international relations. They should also have a very good working knowledge of English.
The fellowship is for three terms, starting October 2010 until June 2011, and carries a stipend of £21,500 per annum.

The international PhD program of the Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies (BSRT) offers outstanding interdisciplinary training and research opportunities for students of natural, material and engineering sciences who want to pursue a career in the field of Regenerative Medicine and aim at translating their scientific discoveries into clinical applications.
The BSRT is a collaboration between the Charité- Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Humboldt-Universitä t zu Berlin, the Freie Universität Berlin, the Technische Universität Berlin, the Universität Potsdam, Max Planck and Helmholtz Institutes and other high-ranking research institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg. This collaboration offers top class scientific training leading to the award of a Dr. rer. nat. or Dr.-Ing. degree for students with a Master´s or equivalent degree in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, veterinary medicine, chemistry, engineering or physics. The program will start in October 2010. It is not necessary to hold the Master´s degree at the time of application but it must have been awarded prior to enrolment into the program. Students admitted to the PhD program will be supported by stipends. T
he international PhD program of the BSRT comprises a series of courses, seminars and research projects designed to equip students with the essentials to become effective scientists in Regenerative Medicine. Interaction between biological, engineering and clinical research will be fostered through mutual supervision of each PhD project by top class researchers from different disciplines from academia and industry.

University of Limerick - Lero Graduate School in Software Engineering
The Lero Graduate School in Software Engineering (LGSSE), the main education initiative of Lero - the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, offers a four-year PhD program provided jointly by the four leading Irish Universities involved in Lero (Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and University of Limerick). The LGSSE program cycle begins in September 2010. The first year includes taught modules in research theory and practice, as well as technical software engineering modules. Also during the first year the candidate will prepare a research proposal that will be the basis for a three-year individual research project. In this way LGSSE seeks to combine the best features of the European and US models of PhD education.

Scholarship program for students from Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe The Bavarian ministry for science, research and art will sponsor scholarships for the academic year 2010/11.
Graduates from Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine are eligible to apply. The scholarships are meant to finance doctoral or postgraduate studies at Bavarian universities. One year scholarships can be extended twice for up to 3 years.
The scholarship is paid out monthly (700 €) and amounts to 8400 € per year. Students with children or an unemployed partner and at least one child receive 860 € per month, which amounts to 10320 € per year. Candidates should send their documents to the address specified in the application forms.
