WHAT DOES THE XIII ESPI SUMMER SCHOOL HAVE TO OFFER?
July 12th - 23rd July 2010.
The Economic and Social Policy Institute is organizing the 13th annual Summer School of Economic Policy. It was started in 1998, triggered by the need to provide education about emerging market economy and contemporary economic trends that were excluded from the formal system of education at the time. Since the Summer School gathers students from the entire region of the Western Balkans, it not only offers students the opportunity to learn from distinguished lecturers, both from Serbia and abroad, but also the chance to meet their peers from the region, and establish friendships and networks that will be important in their future careers.
The focus of the Summer School is on economic policy, and its related fields, such as social policy, education and labor market policies, issues of poverty and inequality, etc. Students will have the opportunity to attend lectures from leading experts in the field of economic and social policy. A further topic is institutional development in the context of economic development. Issues of poverty, inequality and living standard development in some of the European countries will be presented in the context of long run economic perspectives. In addition, certain recommendations and experiences will be highlighted for the developing countries and for Serbia as well. The proper place of financial capital in the modern economic system, a topic of special interest today, and the one which brings forward the loudest calls for state regulation and intervention, will also be presented. In connection with this, different views could be found regarding to the concrete steps that should be taken to solve the consequences of the economic crisis.
TThe students of economics, law and social sciences from the region will have a possibility to share their critical views with the lecturers from both academia and practice. The students will have the opportunity to attend the lectures given by the professors from the prestigious world and local universities. The lecturers who confirmed their participation at the Summer School so far are: Branko Milanović, John Hopkins University and the World Bank, U.S.A.; Barbara Kolm, F.A.v. Hayek Institut, Austria; David Bailey, Coventry University, U.K; Dušan Vujović, World Bank U.S.A. and Singidunum University, Belgrade; Leandro Prados de la Escosura, Universidad Carlos III, Spain; Mark Gradstein, Ben Gurion University, Israel; Mihail Arandarenko, University of Belgrade and Foundation for the Advancement of Economics etc.
Furthermore, students will have an excellent opportunity to find out more about how economic policy making looks like "from the inside", as they will attend lectures by the head of the Republic of Serbia's Securities Commission, Milko Štimac, Vice-president of the Serbian Government and Minister for the Economy and Regional Development, Mlađan Dinkić, and the Governor of the National Bank of Serbia, Radovan Jelašić. Students will also have opportunity to meet representatives of the diplomatic core and international organizations in Serbia, who usually teach the Summer School participants lessons on the democratization of the society and on the role of international organizations in Serbia and the region.

Thirty (30) applicants will be accepted to the Summer School. Education in social sciences and humanities is preferred (especially in economics and related disciplines, such as law, political science, sociology, organizational science and the like).

The detailed programme will be available here shortly. Online registration will be open soon. The Bauhaus Summer Academy is an event organised by the Bauhaus-Universitä t Weimar which provides an international meeting forum for students, graduates and professionals from Germany and abroad. Language programmes as well as academic
projects give participants the opportunity to engage in intercultural exchange, as well as acquiring linguistic or specialised skills. The varied cultural and social programme provides a framework within which a special atmosphere can develop every year.
This features tandem learning with 200 participants from all over the world and 200 German students, who can discover something new and open their eyes to other cultures. Weimar not only is the city of Goethe and Schiller, but also of Nietzsche, Liszt and many other leading figures of German and European intellectual history who left their marks in Weimar. Weimar has a fascinating past and – in spite of being
a small town with 65,000 inhabitants – is nonetheless interesting today, offering numerous cultural institutions and events. Last but not least, Weimar is the home of the Bauhaus. Today the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar tries to revitalise and reinterpret the Bauhaus idea of unity of art and technology.

In the case of the Central European countries, the memories are still present, but the relations between Germany and its Eastern and Western neighbours are now mostly trustful and positive, in particular among young people. In the case of the successor states of former Yugoslavia, the wounds are fresher and the strained relations, both within and between those countries, still need some ongoing effort to re-establish a supportive and cooperative neighbourhood."
Where does the Summer Camp take place?
At the Malteserhof in Königswinter near Bonn. The Malteserhof is a large, old, romantic, halftimbered farmhouse estate, located on the east bank of the Rhine River with direct access to a nature reserve. The rooms are modern. - A desire to take an active part in the camp!

"As in previous years, the young people from all those countries are given the chance to gain first-hand experience from their “camp mates”, to question stereotypes and to discover that what they share may be more important than what divides them. If successful, the Summer Camp will begin with six national groups, but will end with just one large community."

For all participants and counsellors insurance will be taken out to cover accident, personal liability and health care (this also meets the requirements of the visa regulations for the participants from BiH).

YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION WILL BE TREATED CONFIDENTIALLY AND WILL NOT BE PASSED ON.
What are the next steps?
- We will contact you as soon as we have received your application.
- Usually we have more applicants than we have places at the camp. We will inform you by about the middle of April 2010, whether your application has been accepted or not.

"Image Processing" Graduate Summer School
Utah , SAD
The Graduate Summer School bridges the gap between a general graduate education in mathematics and the specific preparation necessary to do research on problems of current interest. In general, these students will have completed their first year, and in some cases, may already be working on a thesis. While a majority of the participants will be graduate students, some postdoctoral scholars and researchers may also be interested in attending.
A graduate course in analysis and one in linear algebra plus some programing experience are strongly recommended. The main activity of the Graduate Summer School will be a set of intensive short lectures offered by leaders in the field, designed to introduce students to exciting, current research in mathematics. These lectures will not duplicate standard courses available elsewhere. Each course will consist of lectures with problem sessions. Course assistants will be available for each lecture series. The participants of the Graduate Summer School meet three times each day for lectures, with one or two problem sessions scheduled each day as well.

The 2010 Summer School will take place from the 4th to the 10th of July in Venice. The theme of this Summer School is Climate Change Negotiations.
Pollution does not respect political boundaries. Classic examples of transboundary pollution include acid deposition, climate change, pollution of the North Sea or the Black Sea, and damage to the stratospheric ozone layer. Transboundary pollution can have regional effects on local ecosystems (e.g., acid deposition in a particular
country) or worldwide impacts on global public goods (e.g., biodiversity loss due to climate change). Countries should be working together to address these pollution problems – the responsibility for reducing any risk to local or global goods must ultimately be shared among nations that benefit.
The challenge is that although nations have a common interest to protect themselves, they may or may not have a national interest to abate pollution voluntary at a socially optimal level. This creates an incentive for one country to free ride off the abatement effort of other nations because no one can be prevented from enjoying the abatement efforts, regardless of whether they abate or not.
The purpose of the proposed summer school is to describe some of the key issues emerging from the economic analysis of these transboundary pollution, global public good problems, and environmental conflict. We focus on climate change as an important example of a global environmental problem requiring global solutions. The school will have two parts. The first part will be devoted to the theoretical models on international environmental agreements based on game theory. This review of the basic models will be extended to include dynamic models and the analysis of uncertainty on the scope of cooperation. The second part of the school will focus on some of the climate-economy integrated assessment models elaborated to evaluate the effects of
different climate policies.
