Iwan Akerman Award

On initiative of Atlas Copco nv, the Research Foundation- Flanders (FWO) and the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique - FNRS grant a biennial Iwan Akerman Award.

The Iwan Akerman Award wants to stimulate innovative research on compressors and expansion machines and related technical disciplines such as aero- and thermodynamics, electromechanical drive systems,  power electronics and high-speed motors, advanced bearing and seal concepts, new high-performance materials and surface coatings. Within the scope are also derivative systems for transformation and recovery of energy, as well as systems to condition the quality of compressed air or gases.

Who?

The award is open to researchers worldwide with a university degree in Exact and/or in Applied Sciences. The submitted work must be either completed or already in progress.

No candidate may previously have been awarded a prize for the same work.

The candidate should not have been granted a license agreement to a third party for the submitted work.

Employees of Atlas Copco Airpower nv are ineligible for the award.

What?

The award amounts to 25,000 EUR.

When?

The Iwan Äkerman Award is a biennial scientific prize. Applications should be submitted before 1 May 2010.

How?

Applications should be submitted via mail or email to the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek – Vlaanderen (FWO), Egmontstraat 5, B-1000 Brussels, Belgium (prijzen@fwo.be), using the dedicated form before the 1st of May 2010.

Laureates of previous cycles

Iwan Akerman Award 2008:

Dr. Ir. Michael DE VOLDER, FWO postdoctoral researcher (K.U.Leuven and IMEC) for his work entitled: “Pneumatic and hydraulic microactuators: a new approach for achieving high force and power densities at microscale”.

Jury

The award will be granted by the FWO/FNRS, based on the recommendations of a jury appointed by the Foundations and according to the current regulations and legislation.

Procedure

Any questions concerning the applications and the awarding of the prize will be settled by the FWO/FNRS.

The FWO/FNRS may decide not to grant the Award, in which case the money will be taken in reserve for the next biennial Award.

Atlas Copco Airpower nv, in consultation with the Award winner(s), has the first right to the industrial and/or commercial exploitation, even when patents are protecting the work receiving the Award.

Atlas Copco Airpower nv, in consultation with the Award winner(s), has the right to make publications about the work receiving the Award, mentioning the name and the position of the author(s).
